For the past five years, I have been trying to make and drink honey and lemon tea every morning. Admittedly, I have not been very consistent and for months I would forget about it but I would definitely notice subtle differences in my skin, lifestyle, and habits. For the past month, I have been trying to make this tea one of the first drinks I have first thing every morning.

Here are some reasons why.

It is a tasty hot drink to look forward to in the morning

If you like sweet and sour, then you will love the taste of warm honey and lemon tea. It is a delicious mixture of citrus and sweet. It is honestly one of the things that motivates me from getting out of my bed.

Recently, I have been trying to drink less coffee. Honey and lemon tea cannot replace the energy I feel after a delicious cup of caffeinated coffee but it certainly helps fulfil the need for a lovely, warm and comforting drink in the cold morning.

It helps strengthen your immune system

When I was revising for my A-level exams in the winter of 2014, I made it a habit to drink honey and lemon tea every morning. I remember that a lot of people caught the flu that winter, or got really ill from seasonal colds. Luckily, I was not one of those people. Although I cannot fully attribute the effectiveness of my immune system to the honey and lemon, I would like to think that it had a big impact.

Lemon is packed with Vitamin C. It is a great natural antioxidant that helps flush out bacteria, protects your cells, and ultimately boosts your immune system. Similarly, honey contains natural antioxidants and also helps soothe the throat.

It can be great for your skin

Vitamin C also does wonders for the skin. Consuming fruits that contain a lot of Vitamin C is also really effective at removing toxins, protecting your skin from the effects of pollution, and can also have anti-aging properties.

Although the benefits of honey and lemon may not have a lot of scientific research supporting it, Vitamin C is definitely one of the most acclaimed ingredients in the skincare and beauty industry for brightening and clearing the skin. Personally, I have definitely seen some differences in my skin whenever I consistently drink it. It seems to make my face look brighter and healthier.

How I make my honey and lemon tea

I buy my Rowse Organic Honey from Costco for around £6 for a pack of three. I usually buy my lemons from M&S.

  • 1 tbsp Organic Honey
  • ½ Medium-sized Lemon

  • Slice a full-sized lemon into half. Wrap the other half in cling film and put it in the fridge for tomorrow’s tea. Cut the remaining lemon into another half and take out the seeds.
  • Boil the kettle.
  • Squeeze the juice from both slices into your favourite mug.
  • Roughly measure out a tablespoon of honey and pour it into the mug (sometimes I put a bit more honey when I crave a bit more sweetness).
  • Pour in the hot water and mix the lemon and honey, leaving it to sit for a few minutes.
  • Sometimes I leave in one lemon slice, but most of the time I take out both lemon slices before I have my drink.

It is important that if you want to reap the benefits of the tea, it must be one of the first things you drink in the morning before you eat. For me, I usually drink a glass of water first, and then have my honey and lemon.

Give it a try!
